About Us

The Expertise You Need. The Empathy You Deserve.

About House of Healing Integrative Medical Center | Torrance, CA

The vision for House of Healing was born from a deeply personal journey shared by sisters Karen and Stephanie (Dr. Abrams). For four years, Karen and Stephanie went doctor to doctor and traveled to numerous top ranked academic centers with no answers. They endured building despair throughout the years due to being discounted and "blown-off" as being too complex, "it must just be depression and anxiety." Karen battled a rapidly worsening condition. Stephanie researched tirelessly to find the answers and finally settled on Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and Mitochondrial Disease and took Karen to the super-specialists of those diseases. Eventually Karen was diagnosed with MCAS and diagnosed as a terminal mitochondrial disease under the umbrella of muscular dystrophy. Despite clear data showing the severity of her illness, she and Stephanie faced repeated dismissal from doctors and major hospitals, leaving them without help or hope.

During one of her hospitalizations in 2018, at a time when she believed she was dying, Karen told Stephanie she finally understood why this was happening: they were meant to open a clinic where patients would be considered, supported, and treated with compassion. In this place, no one would ever have to experience the same roadblocks they faced. She believed she would receive a miracle, allowing them to make this vision a reality.

That miracle came through the same type of regenerative and integrative medicine the clinic offers today. A pivotal figure in Karen’s recovery was Dr. Sonja Fung, a licensed naturopathic doctor who took on Karen’s complex case when no one else would. Dr. Fung researched tirelessly, ultimately introducing Karen and Stephanie to emerging regenerative medicine focused on mitochondrial repair. This became the turning point in Karen’s treatment and laid the groundwork for the clinic’s approach.

Karen’s first significant breakthrough came through a direct cord blood donation from her stepdaughter — the first step in the regenerative therapies that helped bring her back to life. Over time, Karen went from dying to healing, and Stephanie became the driving force behind transforming that experience into a mission.

House of Healing exists because three women — Karen, Stephanie, and Dr. Sonja Fung — refused to accept “no” for an answer. Their shared journey of resilience, advocacy, and medical discovery inspired the creation of a clinic dedicated to giving patients the answers, respect, and care that every person deserves.

The Doctor Who Turned Her Family’s Story Into Hope

A Doctor Who’s Lived the Journey

Dr. Abrams’ medical philosophy was shaped not only by over 25 years of clinical practice, but also by her personal journey as a mother, sister, and advocate. She spent four years uncovering her sister’s diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ultimately helping to save her life through regenerative medicine. Her daughter’s autism has given her firsthand insight into how interconnected the gut, brain, and immune system truly are, inspiring her to specialize in gastrointestinal health and neurodevelopmental disorders.

This combination of medical expertise and lived experience makes Dr. Abrams uniquely equipped to help those with complex conditions like:
